STUDYING FLUTE AT THE HOCHSCHULE FÜR MUSIK FREIBURG

The highly reputated Flute class of the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg has a long and glorious tradition of excellence, as an impressive number of legendary flutists (including Aurèle Nicolet or William Bennett) have been teaching there.
Mario Caroli is today the full time professor of flute at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg.
Twice a year (in February and in June), the school offers possibilities of an entrance examination.
Please, notice the deadlines for your candidature :
– December 1st for the February session (admitted candidates start in the following month of April)
– April 1st for the June session (admitted candidates start in the following month of October)
The HfM Freiburg offers three levels of studies:
– BACHELOR (possibility to choose between artistic or pedagogical Bachelor)
– MASTER (possibility to choose between artistic, pedagogical or new music Master)
– KONZERTEXAMEN or PhD

BACHELOR

The entrance examination consists in two Rounds. In the first round, contestants play their flute programs. Afterwards, a selected number of candidates will be allowed to go further to second round, during which they play a short program on the piano, as well as other tests (rhythms, sing…). Prior to the first round, all candidates are submitted to a written test of music theory.

MASTER

One round. A free program displaying different styles. A classical concerto of free choice is compulsory. Please feel free to choose the cadenzas you prefer or compose your own!

KONZERTEXAMEN/MEISTERKLASSE

The selection consists in two Rounds. The candidates selected from the flute jury in the first round go to the second round. A specific jury selects a number of participants, among all those who passed through the first round.

PhD (at the German-French « College Glarean »)

OTHER STUDY POSSIBILITIES AT THE HOCHSCHULE FÜR MUSIK FREIBURG

– ERASMUS: international students’ exchanges are possible through the ERASMUS and ERASMUS+ programs. You must be a Student of a Music University to be eligible for this program. LANGUAGE CERTIFICATE:

A B1 German language certificate is compulsory for studying at the HfM Freiburg. According to the cycle you want to apply, the rules change:
– BACHELOR: for an admission to 1st and 2nd Semester, you have one year to get your certificate, in case you don’t have when you apply and/or after being admitted.
ATTENTION: if you are getting admitted directly from the 3rd Semester, you must show your B1 certification within the registration to the entrance examination.
– MASTER: for an admission to 1st Semester, you have one semester to get your certificate, in case you don’t have when you apply and/or after being admitted.
ATTENTION: if you are getting admitted directly from the 2nd Semester, you must show your B1 certification within the registration to the entrance examination.
– KONZERTEXAMEN: no language certificate is required

FLUTE TEAM AT THE HOCHSCHULE FÜR MUSIK FREIBURG:

At the HfM Freiburg displays only one fute class. Prof. MARIO CAROLI is responsible for the Artistic Bachelors, Masters, Konzertexamens (KE), Erasmus and PhD Students
Caroli has two assistants for his students. They have very clearly defined pedagogical roles:
– Prof. DANIEL LAMPERT (Solo-Piccolo Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg) teaches Piccolo;
– ETNI MOLLETONES (Solo-Flute Badische Staatskapelle Karlsruhe) teaches Orchestral Excepts.
In addition to the flute class, for the Pedagogical Bachelors and Masters (Lehramt) and Elementare Musikpädagogik (EMP) Students, the pedagogical team consists in:

– CLAIRE GARDE
